The Winona Steamboat Days Festival Association named the 2011 Harbormaster in their tradition of Surprise Thursday.

The Festival Committee lead by the 2010 Harbormaster, Luke Merchlewitz, walked in to the LEC Thursday morning on a mission – to “CAP” the 2011 Harbormaster.

Kevin Kearney was nominated by his daughter Kayla. Kayla’s nomination included Kevin outstanding service to the Winona community as a Police Officer and as a  Community Volunteer.

Kevin recently received the Tom Keating Award for outstanding service in preventing underage drinking. He has advised many local boards such as the City of Winona Human Rights Commission, Winona Area Crime Stoppers, CJCC – Crime Prevention Committee, CJCC – Community Outreach and Diversity committee, Winona Area Public Schools Community Education, Project FINE, WSU Neighborhood Relations and Winona County Restorative Justice. Kevin is an Eagle Scout and still volunteers his time to Boy Scouts as a District Commissioner. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus, Winona Civic Association, and Winona Harley Owners Group. For three years now Kevin and Kayla have taken part in the Goose Bump Jump.  Kevin  also owns a chimney cleaning business.

His daughter noted in her nomination that while doing all this “ he comes to (her) dance competitions, and is very understanding, but strict when it comes to (her) grades.”

Kevin will be “Dancing with the Winona Stars” in August as part of the group competiton. His group is “Guns and Hoses” made up of police and firemen. They will be raising money for M.D.A. and Sugarloaf District Boy Scouts.

The Winona Steamboat Days Festival Association is very proud to have Kevin represent them for the 2011 Festival. There will be a Harbormaster Reception to kick off Steamboat Days on Wednesday, June 15 at 5pm in the Beverage Garden at the foot of Walnut Street, from 5pm – 7pm. Please join to celebrate and honor Kevin Kearney!
