Bill Reinarts Named 2012 Steamboat Days Harbormaster

You’d think at 6’7”, a guy would stand out in a crowd.

But long and lean (and behind-the-scene) Winonan Bill Reinarts was surprised on Wednesday morning when his hometown crowned him Harbormaster for the 2012 Steamboat Days celebration. The accolade isn’t given out for height.

Reinarts has quietly constructed a legacy of community service that spans more than three decades. He doesn’t keep track. That was recently done by the Harbormaster nominating committee, who pieced together some of the record:

  • More than 10 years in a variety of roles at the Winona Family Y
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters, a Board member/president, volunteer, and fundraiser that included Bowl for Kids Sake, cycling over 1,000 miles in bike marathons – and Big Brother to more than one child
  • A long-time Board Member of the Winona Red Cross;
  • Board Member of Rock Solid Youth Center
  • Founding and current Board member of Winona’s Fair Trade organization, Many Hands Many Lands;
  • Employer of dozens of Winonans over the years at Reinarts Stained Glass Studio
  • …the list goes on.

“Bill’s style is to contribute a ton where he serves, and stay in the background best as he can. You just can’t leave a handprint like his, and keep it a secret forever,” suggested one Harbormaster committee person. “He’s a net giver, and a special one at that. It’s his model of community service that people reach for, and he just keeps doing naturally.”
